Fairy Tail Collection 3 (Episodes 49-72) (Cert 12)

4 Discs DVD (Distributor: Manga Entertainment) Running time: 587 minutes approx.

Manga Entertainment are gearing us up for the first new instalment of Fairy Tail for the New Year by taking us on a trip down a fairly recent path of memory lane with this latest collection pack. Combining volumes 5 and 6, the four discs in this set includes the celebrated Nirvana Arc for fans who missed out before to enjoy in one big chunk without having to wait three months for the next instalment.

There is however a tiny caveat attached to this release – it is DVD only. The main reason for these collection sets was to retrospectively bring the first four volumes up to date on Blu-ray with the addition of this format for this title, which began with volume 5. Understandably there may be some fans who prefer these box sets and would be waiting for this particular release but for Blu-ray fans, they presumably bought the individual volumes already in that format, therefore possibly limiting the scope of appeal of this release.

It is no secret that Manga are currently scaling down their Blu-ray releases for certain titles and with the individual volumes already available in HD, one can appreciate the cost cutting involved in not having to duplicate these episodes again in HD (which is rather expensive, not to mention the additional cost incurred via the BBFC). So while Blu-ray fans might see this as an unnecessary step backwards in being a DVD only release, this policy makes sense financially.

Rest assured however that the individual volumes will still be released on both DVD and Blu-ray so it is not like we’ll never see this series again in HD, only the collection sets will remain DVD only for the foreseeable future.

This doesn’t diminish the quality of the actual content though. As mentioned earlier the central arc featured here is the Nirvana Arc, one of the more popular adventures in the Fairy Tail oeuvre, which sees our heroes team up with other guilds to face off against the powerful dark guild known as Oración Seis to prevent them from resurrecting the dangerous Nirvana spell. A sprawling and action packed story, this marks the first big mission for Fairy Tail newcomer Wendy and her cat Charle.
