WWE – TLC 2012 (Cert 15)
1 Disc Blu-ray / DVD (Distributor: Fremantle Media) Running Time: 166 minutes approx.
The basis for the final PPV of 2012 is to highlight some of the more brutal and popular stunt show matches the WWE has to offer – namely the tables match, the ladder match and the chair match (okay this one isn’t so popular but it can be brutal) and of course the compendium of all of the these – the TLC match!
The show took place on December 16th 2012 at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, New York in front of 15, 748 fans and your commentators are Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and JBL.
Onto the matches and as usual, no results but loads of opinion.
Tag Team No 1 Contenders Tables Match – Rhodes Scholars vs Rey Mysterio & Sin Cara
The star of this match, according to the crowd reaction, was Cody Rhodes’s moustache, despite the masked Mexican marvels pulling out their exciting aerial offence in an attempt to become the top contenders to the tag titles. A good opener.
WWE US Title Match – Antonio Cesaro (c) vs. R-Truth
A rematch from the Survivor Series and thankfully an improvement on said match, although R-Truth suffered a nasty leg injury here that put him on the shelf until late February this year.
For some reason the WWE creative decided we needed something else to make this show worth the money so we are treated to another dose of the inexecrable Miz TV “talk show” segment – on a PPV. Anyway the guests are 3MB – Heath Slater, Drew McIntyre and Jinder Mahal – who exchange insults with Miz then turn their attention to the Spanish announce team which brings out….. Ricardo Rodriguez??? 3MB attack Ricardo so his boss Alberto Del Rio for the save. As if Miz’s awkward face turn the month before wasn’t enough we now get Del Rio’s turn – just like that! The Miz joins in then challenges 3MB to a six man later with a mystery partner and the audience can barely contain their apathy.
WWE IC Title Match – Kofi Kingston (c) vs Wade Barrett
Another one of those never ending feuds for those stuck in mid card hell and while it’s a solid match with both guys working hard, it’s nothing new and for a PPV comes across as filler and not a crucial title defence. This is not the fault of the wrestlers by the way.
WWE Champ CM Punk addresses the crowd from a sky box. Punk was supposed to defend the title against Ryback in a TLC match but Punk needed surgery on a knee injury. This meant a frantic scramble to rearrange the card so Punk was “injured” during an angle on RAW, which lead to the TLC match being postponed until the first RAW of 2013 and in its place on the PPV was the next match.
TLC Match – The Shield vs Ryback & Team Hell No
Despite being a TLC match there was nothing at stake so the match could end with a pinfall or submission. It also marked the competitive in-ring debut of Ambrose, Rollins and Reigns and what a debut it was. They proved their worth and made a huge impact in the process, including Rollins taking a scary bump through a stack of tables! Great match!
WWE Divas Title Match – Eve Torres (c) vs. Naomi
Naomi won this title shot in a Battle Royale on the pre-show where the Divas were dressed in Santa outfits for some added fan service. Actually Naomi is a talented, gymnastic style wrestler, which makes her role as a dancer for Doofus Clay a waste of her talent. The crowd seemed a lot more into this match than usual, presumably due to Naomi being an unknown quantity to them (since about 5 people watched NXT in the US).
World Title Chairs Match – Big Show (c) vs. Sheamus
Third consecutive PPV match for these two, the chair stipulation born out of the whipping Sheamus gave Show with one at the Survivor Series a month earlier. Pretty much the same match they’ve had before with the chairs used sparingly until the, ahem BIG finish!
The Miz, Alberto Del Rio & Brooklyn Brawler vs 3MB
Well they were in Brooklyn….This would be Steve (Brawler) Lombardi’s first PPV match since Wrestlemania V in 1989! The crowd feel just as uncomfortable about Del Rio’s face turn as Del Rio does although they are quicker to get behind Ricardo for some reason.
MITB Ladder Match – Dolph Ziggler vs John Cena
Ziggler was forced to put his MITB briefcase on the line against Cena because Vickie Guerrero had been bullying AJ Lee into resigning as RAW GMover a supposed fling she had with Cena. Yup, this main event match is built around two people who are not even in it!! Cena does an impressive strength when he press slams the ladder with Ziggler still on it! Otherwise he is his usual robotic self which the crowd see through and respond accordingly although that isn’t the big story of this match…
Despite some mind numbing extraneous material that had no business being on a PPV this is a solid enough end to the year for WWE. Nothing is exceptionally bad while the two big matches delivered what they promised.
